Tūranga: Tūranga, Christchurch’s Central Library opened in October 2018 and has been designed as a 21st-century centre of knowledge and exploration. On the outside, it has been inspired by the warm colours and rolling shadows of the Port Hills and the Canterbury plains, as well as the angular fronds of the native Harakeke flax that once grew in the vast wetlands of Christchurch. And on the inside, the design can be summed up in three simple words: made for people. That means highly accessible and multipurpose spaces for everyone to meet, talk, learn, be entertained, create, collaborate, debate, and, yes, read a book.
